Some farmers are bitten by the travelling bug, with many taking in working trips to Australia and New Zealand. But have you ever considered Norway?
If so, then there is a job opportunity which could be perfectly suited to you! The role offered is a Dairy Farm assistant, with the farm located on the Lofoten Island in the Northwest of Norway.
The Successful applicant will be responsible for working side-by-side with the current farm manager, helping with milking, feeding and working in a shift rotation. Other responsibilities include looking after some of the many dry stock on the outfarm, while there will also be some tractor work involved for all the machinery enthusiasts.
The farm consists of a herd of 40 Norwegian Red cattle, with all offspring being reared on the farm. This means that, at any time, there are over 100 head of cattle on the farm, with all bull calf’s finished for beef.
"It’s an old-school setup with a cowshed that doubles up as a parlour." Kyle explained to That'sFarming.
"Cows remain inside until the snow is gone and then they are grazing about 30/40 acres, strip grazing, with a rough grazing pad for bales to be fed out on when grass is short. There is a total of about 250 acres, but most of the ground is for bailing as they have a long winter." he added.
The work starts with a weeks training and then the actual work is carried out on a week on and a week off basis with the farm manager. Milking is carried out twice daily, with the successful applicant then responsible for calf rearing and feeding duties.
