The finalists for the 2018 National Dairy Council and Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards have been revealed. Read who made the final nine below!

The nine finalists for this year’s NDC/Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards have been revealed, with representatives from Longford, Monaghan, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick and three from Cork.

Last winners were the Walsh family from Ballylooby, Cahir in Co. Tipperary. The family, who are supplying Dairygold and have been farming in the area since the 1800’s, won the award for their excellent performance in 2017. Read more about the family and how they are performing this year here.

1 - The Ryan family Tipperary
Having farmed in Lisheen since the 1880’s, Michael Ryan is currently the 5th generation farmer to farm this land.
The Ryan’s consist of Tom and his wife Mary, who have three children; Angela, Michael and Padraig. Michael holds a honours degree in Agricultural Science and began working full time, in partnership with his parents, in 2017. The family made the list due to their impressive performance levels, which you can read below.

The O’Shaughnessy’s have had the current farm in the family for over six decades. John and his wife Mary have four children, Niamh, Eoin, Patrick and Tadhg, who all lend a helping hand when needed.

3 - O'Donovan Farm | Cork
Liam and Dolores O’Donovan, former winners of the Drinagh Quality Milk Awards in 2017, are the fifth-generation farmers on the home farm. They have four daughters, Ruby, Eve, Emma and Annie and Liam has been farming since the age of eight, going full-time at 18.

4 - Downing Farm | Cork
Kevin and Bernie Downing are fifth-generation farmers in Whitechurch, Co. Cork. Kevin took over the farm from his father in 2004 and their farm manager, Tom Carr, joined the team over 35 years ago.

5 - Furney Farm | Cork
Nominated by the Barryroe Co-op, The Furney family run their 160-strong enterprise on a 70 hectare holding.

6 - Crowley Farm | Cork
Fourth-generation farmers on their home farm, Dan and Helen Crowley run their enterprise alongside their son Tom. They have three other children, John, Noelle and Kate, who also helped out on the farm during their youths. Dan’s son Tom has now joined the home enterprise on a full-time basis and is now in a partnership with his father.

7 - Keating Farm | Waterford
Nominated by Glanbia Ireland, John and his wide Yvonne Keating, live on their farm in Dungarvan with John’s mother, Cait, and their two children Aimee and Chloe. John took over the running of the farm from his father and hopes to pass it onto the next generation.

8 - McKenna Farm | Monaghan
The McKenna family have been farming on their holding in Derrgannon for at least five generations. It is here that Darren and Denise run their family run dairy enterprise with their four children, Micheál, Daithí, Caragh and Annie. The team of six are also helped out on occasion by many of their nieces and nephews, in what is a real family-run operation.

9 - McTiernan Farm | Longford
John and Anne McTiernan, who were nominated by Aurivo, run their farm with the help of their two kids, Catriona and Ciaran. They are the third-generation to farm the lands and a career as a dairy farmer is all John ever hoped for.
