Children who drink full fat milk end up healthier than those drinking low fat or other non dairy milk products a study has shown.
Another win for the dairy lobby as a recent study has debunked advice to switch children to semi skimmed or low fat milk.
A study of more than 2700 children found that those given full fat milk ended up with a significantly lower body mass index than those given other varieties. In a time when childhood obesity is a major issue the news comes as a welcome relief.
The Canadian study also revealed that those children drinking full fat milk had higher levels of Vitamin D which helps protect bones and immunity.
The research was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Lead researcher Dr Jonathon Maguire, of St Michael's Hospital in Toronto, said the difference of drinking whole fat milk amounted to the difference between having a healthy weight and being overweight which itself leads to other health problems.
