Former Ear to the Ground presenter and EU MEP Mairead McGuiness has confirmed she will run for the coveted role of President of the European Parliament. McGuinness is currently the vice president of the parliament.
McGuinness made her intentions known this morning after it became apparent that current President Martin Schulz would not seek a third term as president.
Ms Mc Guinness is the second MEP to officially declare their candidacy to become the European People’s Party (of which Fine Gael is a member) nominee for European Parliament president, following Alain Lamassoure’s announcement earlier this year.
Slovenia’s Fomer Prime Minister Lojze Peterle isw also understood to be in the race for President.
Agriculture has formed one of the backbones of McGuinness’s work and interest areas.
