Mayo native appointed as new Minister for Agriculture

A new Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine has been appointed.

Mayo TD, Dara Calleary, will move to fill the position, An Taoiseach confirmed earlier this morning (Wednesday, July 15th).

The Trinity College Dublin graduate previously worked with Chambers Ireland and in a bank.

Experience 

The Ballina native has been a member of Fianna Fáil national executive since 1997 and has served on committees on agriculture, youth affairs, transport, enterprise, and employment.

He was first elected to the Dáil in 2007 and was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise an Employment with responsibility for Labour Affairs.

In 2010, he became the Minister of State at the Department of An Taoiseach and the Department of Finance with responsibility for public service transformation.

He was re-elected to the Dáil in February 2011 and 2016 and served as the party’s spokesperson on justice, jobs, enterprise, innovation, public expenditure and reform.

He was appointed deputy leader of the party and director of policy development just over two years ago.

He recently became the government chief whip and Minister of State in the Department of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport, and the Gaeltacht, with responsibility for the Gaeltacht and Sport.

He is now responsible for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine portfolio.
