The average price of Mule ewe lambs increased by €7/head from €120 in 2018 to €127 at this year’s Mayo Mule and Greyface Group’s sale, which was held on Saturday (August 24th).
99% of ewe lambs found new homes at the two-day premier show and sale which took place on Friday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 24th at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, Co. Mayo.
2,100 ewe lambs sold to an average of €127; 160 lambs pushed from €87 to €100, 640 lambs traded from €101 to €120, 1000 lambs climbed from €121 to €140, 230 lambs went under the hammer from €141 to €160 and 40 lambs realised €165.
2nd-prize-winners from Tom Staunton’s Maskview Flock peaked at €200, while 1st-prize-winners from John and Frank Morahan’s Woodview Flock topped out at €210 [main image].
Speaking to That’s Farming, a spokesperson for Mayo Mule and Greyface Group said: “Overall, the ewe lamb trade at this year’s sale offered great value to buyers; they were met with a yard of 2,100 top-quality mule ewe lambs which was a credit to all group members.”
“The quality of the stock is somehow managing to improve year-on-year.”

Hogget purchasers were selective this year, with an emphasis on quality and strength, according to a spokesperson.
“Overall, they met a good steady trade with good value for buyers.”
230 hoggets sold under €150, while the vast majority clicked from €150 to €200, 670 hoggets sold in this price range and 200 hoggets changed hands from €200-€220.
The returns were up by €8/head on 2018 figures. This year, 1100 sold to an average of €170 while last year, 800 averaged €162.
