The farmer — who was shot dead in Aghamore, Co. Mayo shortly before midnight on Tuesday, September 16th — has been named as Brendan Kilduff.
It is understood that the 67-year-old died from gunshot wounds after being mistaken to be an intruder outside his friend’s home.
Kilduff called to his friend’s house on his way from a beef protest at Dawn Meats in Ballyhaunis.
A man in his 80s was arrested and released, without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The post-mortem has been completed, and the results will not be released for operational reasons, a Garda spokesperson.
Brendan’s remain will be reposing at the Marian Funeral Home, Knock this evening (Friday), from 6pm to 8pm.
He will be laid to rest after 12 noon mass at Church of St. John the Baptist, Knock tomorrow in a local cemetery.
