Knock Marriage Introductions (formerly Knock Marriage Bureau) – one of Ireland’s longest running matchmaking agencies – is closing after fifty-one years.
Based in Knock Shrine, Co. Mayo, in the Archdiocese of Tuam, it was established in 1968 with an aim to help people to meet suitable marriage partners; it has been responsible for at least 960 marriages.
No longer “viable”
The Catholic Church issued a statement outlining that it is no longer “viable” to run the service because of the advent of the internet and online dating agencies and apps.
“In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in the demand for the service offered by Knock Marriage Introductions.”
“The annual subscriptions from clients who have used the service have had to be supplemented in recent years by donations from dioceses around Ireland.”
