As a mart manager, Ann Harkin is voicing her opinion on the “state of farming in Ireland and the struggle to obtain a fair deal for the hours of hard work and dedication which are put into producing stock on a daily basis”.
In a statement on Facebook, the manager of Raphoe Livestock Mart said: “It's a poor reflection on the Government that they have forgotten what lies at the heart of this island - the farming community who put their trust in them and ultimately got them where they are today.”
“I think they have forgotten Ireland is a country with agriculture at its core. What are we to become if farming gets any worse in our country?”
“It's high time someone with Ireland's interests and the interests of its people take notice. We are heading for disaster and irreparable damage to the future of farming on our shores.”
“Will the powers that be start looking after all sectors which are so important to the very survival of our country! Someone, somewhere in government has to say, 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH'!!”
“Are we to have no health services, no post offices, no Garda Stations and no farmers - just overgrowth in fields to heed Europe?!!”
“Well, if we all sit back and take it, that's where we are heading - absolute disaster!”
“Please wake up before it's too late and stand with the farming community and safeguard the future for the younger generation.”
“We need to encourage, not discourage, so as part of the farming community and manager of Raphoe Mart, I voice my opinion and appeal for the powers that be to listen to the farmer's plea for a fair deal.” the statement concluded.
