Mark Reidy, a past pupil of Cólaiste Chiarain, Croom, Co. Limerick, was one of two students at Waterford IT to win the 2019 Dairymaster Student Award.
The final-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) Agricultural Science science received the award for his final-year project which compared computerised calf feeding systems to conventional once and twice-a-day feeding systems.
He focused on calf health, calf performance and farm labour for the purpose of the study.
He wanted to investigate whether or not computerised calf feeding systems are a feasible substitute for the laborious once and twice-a-day bucket feeding systems.
Mark was born and raised on a dairy farm which places great emphasis on calf rearing which provided inspiration for the project.
''I'm ecstatic and delighted about receiving this award and I would like to thank my supervisor Martin Raftice in Kildalton College and Dairymaster who have done so much for us at Waterford IT,'' said Mark.
