The Ploughing Championships are just around the corner and companies around the country are preparing to exhibit at this unique event in the Irish agricultural calendar. One company which is preparing for their 40th year in business and their 40th trip to the Ploughing Championships is Co Mayo firm Major Equipment Intl Ltd.
The company was established in 1976 to manufacture trailers and safety cages. Then in 1979, when EU development funds prompted investments grants for cattle throughout Ireland there was a growing demand for slurry handling equipment. This initiated the development of the renowned Major Slurry tanker, sold in many international markets and leading the competition in terms of quality, performance and reliability.
From these humble beginnings the company has developed into an international business manufacturing grass mowers and slurry handling equipment. The company employs 78 people and exports 65% of its annual production to countries around the world and as far away as Australia and Chile.
“It has been a fantastic 40 years and we are positive for the future,” said John. A testament to the positivity at Major is the recent addition of three new members of staff to the team in Ballyhaunis. To see the extensive range of equipment from Major and photos from their ‘Win A Trip to Italy’ photo competition, visit their stand (Row 19, Stand 456) at this year’s Ploughing Championships.
