Members from Portlaoise Macra are continuing their celebrations this week, after they became All-Ireland ‘Known Your Agriculture’ quiz champions over the October bank holiday weekend.
The event, which tests teams on a broad range of agricultural knowledge, took place in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary at Macra na Feirme’s annual rally. Teams were tested on agricultural related topics such as Ag science, technical management, policy and machinery during the quiz, with the team from Portlaoise coming out on top.
The team was made up of Paddy Delaney, Thomas Cushen, Liam Brophy and Adrian Seale. Adrian was recently featured as part of That’sFarming’s young farmer series, see here for more. This is not the first All-Ireland victory for the Portlaoise club either, as they previously won the quiz back in 2015.
Speaking after the victory, team member Thomas Cushen said the team prepared for the All-Ireland with intensive studying.
'Intensive study started after our team qualified from the county round. Each team member focused on certain topics. On the night there were 29 strong teams and we were faced with some challenging questions. Lucky for us our preparation paid off and we were delighted to come out on top on the night,' said Thomas.
Incredibly, this success was followed by another for Portlaoise over the course of the weekend, with Liam Brophy named the overall winner of the over-23 Senior Beef Stock Judging Competition.
'It's a great achievement for the club to add another All-Ireland Title to the collection, after a successful year for the club coming runner-up in the All-Ireland Farm Skills and Dairy Stock Judging Competition.' Portlaoise Macra member, Thomas Cushen, said of the clubs success.

Club Development Officer, Vivienne Phelan, spoke of the club’s delight at the recent success.
'We are thrilled for the team and in particular for Liam who was also successful in the Beef Stock Judging. These wins are a testament to the level of agricultural knowledge and skill our members hold, and the hard work and dedication that went into preparing for these competitions.” Vivienne Phelan noted.
“Portlaoise Macra is one of the most active clubs locally. We participate in a variety of competitions throughout the year including debating, soccer, bowling and public speaking. New members, aged between 17-35 years, from farming and non-farming backgrounds are always welcome. There really is something for everyone.' The Club Development officer concluded.
