This week on Machinery review Stuart Downie profiles the Big M420 by Krone.

Lets set the stall from the start. There is nothing that mows like a Big M. Nothing. These machines are just built solely for knocking crops and Krone have them down to a tee. The Big M420 is the next generation mower after The Big Mark 2 and the development between the two is colossal. Mower beds are now belt driven instead of shaft, cab is quieter, the Man engine thumps out 400 horses and you can sail down the field hitting speeds of 20 kmh depending on the crop density.

So, to the nitty gritty, I said at the start nothing mows like a Big M. Here's why. Like its predecessors, the Big M 420 features automotive trans-mission, which controls engine speed automatically to match it to the ground speed selected and the current load on the driveline. The cooling system, too, received an update to match the enormous engine power. Evidence of this is the large radiator with rotary screen and exhaust system. Aspiration is from above, which brings the advantage of much cleaner air. This automatic cleaning process prevents the engine from overheating and reduces the time spent on cleaning.

And of course the cab. Visibility is obviously paramount when you have 10 feet of mowers hanging out either side of you. The new style cab sees more window space, slimmer pillars and enough lights to be seen from the moon. Controls couldn’t be simpler. if you are handy at playstation or x-box, it’s right up your street. The joystick has been customized to the mower conditioners and combines state-of-the-art ergonomics with serious multi-functionality. For example, a cross control raises/lowers all mowers at the same time on the headland. The same control also operates the optional self-levelling feature on slopes.

Each mower is assigned its own control on the joystick, which adjusts each mower separately to its individual area of work.

Two further buttons control the hydraulic cutting height adjustment system, which is an optional feature. It allows operators to store and retrieve two cutting heights, thereby reducing stress on the operator and allowing him to adjust the machine quickly and simply to a wide variety of harvest conditions.

The mowers. 30ft of them to be exact. The Big M 420 features the new heavy duty mower bed with SafeCut auto-reset system, Like the Big M Mark 2, the Big M 420 is available with a choice of three conditioner versions. The high-performance CV conditioner offers a 9.7m work width and uses freely pivoting V-type steel tines, which give extremely intensive conditioning. The rotor speed is set conveniently on the gearbox (700rpm and 1,000rpm). Feed augers are available for the two side mowers. This Krone Big Swath System transfers the conditioned crop from the conditioner to the middle of the machine without the material dropping to the ground and becoming contaminated. This Big Swath merging system operates in combination with both the CV conditioner and the CRi conditioner, and when the auger hoods are open, it spreads the crop across the full width.

So there you have it. The Big M 420. The ultimate weapon of grass destruction.
