Tributes have poured in for the late David Thomlinson – a well-known livestock auctioneer.
Irish breeders who have travelled to various sales in the UK would be familiar with the figure who worked in the auctioneering industry for over five decades.
Releasing a statement on Facebook, the British Limousin Cattle said: “On behalf of BLCS Council, members, and all staff, heartfelt condolences are extended to Sheila and family at this very sad time.”
“In so many ways, David has been such a huge and important part of the livestock industry in the UK and, of course, in the development and promotion of the Limousin breed, cattle that he loved with a never-ending passion.”
Through his years as an auctioneer at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, he conducted many highlight Limousin sales and memorably became the first auctioneer to sell a bull in the UK to over six figures, the spokesperson added.
“He was always happy selling cattle well on behalf of vendors and to new entrants as they got a start.”
“At every level, he would give ready advice, help and encouragement to breeders and buyers and his words were always with knowledge, experience and wisdom.”
The spokesperson noted that his work in 2001 is something that “will never be forgotten in the industry” and work that he undertook with “ability, dignity, and great empathy.”
With a great knowledge of stock David judged many pedigree cattle shows and sales including the majors and the blue riband interbreeds.
“Through his work with H&H, and with his affinity to Limousin cattle, David’s mark on British Limousin extends the mantle of him being a true legend of the breed.”
He served as a distinguished Council member of the Society, and last year completed his term as President of the BLCS - a role that he loved and performed to the highest level.
“It’s difficult to sign off on such sad and unexpected news other than to remember the man that he was, his abilities, his company, and his friendship. R.I.P. David.”
