IFA President Joe Healy said he understands that the live export trade to Turkey will open next week
“Turkey is a high volume live cattle destination, capable of paying very good prices.’ Healy said.
Turkey imported 380,000 head in 2015 the majority of which came from South America.
The immediate demand from Turkey is for younger stock mainly weanling bulls up to 12 months of age and up to 300 kgs from the suckler herd.
At 84,000, Irish live exports are back 26,000 head year to date. Ireland exported a total of 178,000 head in 2015.
Live exports are seen by beef farmers as a crucial alternative to the dominant buying might of powerful beef processors such as Dawn Meats and Kepak.
