The worst polluters in the country have been revealed and it lists three environmentally friendly food companies and a recycling company.

The list of the country’s worst polluting companies was released in recent days by the Environmental Protection Agency, with three food companies placed on a watch list.

The list featured three sites belonging to major food companies in the country, with all three laying the claim of being environmentally friendly. Included on the list were DairyGold, for their plant in Mallow, Carbery Food ingredients, for their plant in Ballineen Co. Cork, and Arrabawn Co-op in Nenagh Co. Tipperary. The list also features a recycling company, with Ashgrove Recycling in Co. Cork also named.

The three companies now feature on an EPA watch list, among other companies who ranked among the worst with regards to environmental compliance. All sites that feature on the list have been named as “national priority sites”, meaning a number of complaints were made against them and a range of compliance issues recorded. The three above food producers all have Bord Bia Origin Green designation.

The campaign officer of the Irish Wildlife Trust, Pádraic Fogarty, welcomed the news, calling the Origin Green scheme a sham and also calling for it to end.

"It is time that Origin Green was exposed for the sham that it is and should be scrapped. Instead of being a tool to promote better environmental performance it is simply a smokescreen for ‘greenwashing’ the significant environmental problems which we face," he said.

He then said the dwindling Curlew populations can be linked to Fine Gael’s agricultural expansion programmes, which he says the current Origin Green Scheme does nothing to prevent.

"The imminent extinction of the Curlew, for instance, can be directly linked to Fine Gael’s massive agricultural expansion programmes, something which Origin Green does nothing to address.", he continued.

Below are the companies named on the National Priority list by the EPA:
Arrabawn Co-operative Society LTD, Nenagh, Tipperary.
Dairygold Co-operative LTD, Mallow Co. Cork.
Carbery Food Ingredients LTD, Ballineen Co. Cork.
Nutricia Infant Nutrition Limited, Co. Cork.
T&J Standish LTD, Co. Offaly.
Arrow Group Limited, Co. Kildare.
Ashgrove Recycling, Co. Cork.
