“A lot of farmer custom around the ring for stronger FR calves” – Driver

Just over 300 cattle and 120 calves were presented for sale at Tullow Mart on Friday, February 14th, according to Eric Driver.

“Trade remained strong for all classes, especially forward store cattle and lighter store bullocks with a steady trade in the calf ring for the continental, Hereford and AA-type calves.” explained the mart manager, who added that light Friesian calves were easier by €5-€10.

Bullocks

Beef and forward Hereford and Angus bullocks sold from €1.90/kg, with up to €1,020 with the kg forked out for good continental-type forward and beef cattle.

Hereford and Angus stores ranged from €1.90-€2.40/kg, with up to €2.70/kg paid for continental entries.

Heifers:

Butcher and heavier-type Hereford and Angus entries pushed from €2.00-€2.20/kg, while stores ranged from €1.95-€2.75/kg.

Bull weanlings:

“A very lively trade with lots of farmers around the ring for the bull weanlings.” Driver added.

Plainer, easier-types fetched from €2.30/kg with up to €2.75-€2.80/kg recorded for well-conformed entries; some bulls suitable for export made in excess of €3.00/kg.

Cull cows:

Friesian cull cows sold from €100 to €350 with the kg - depending on flesh and age. Store continental culls went under the hammer from €150 up to €800 with the kg for heavier-types.

Calves:

“The largest calf sale of the spring so far. Lighter Friesian calves sold from €15 to €40/head with the stronger Friesian with a bit of age and milk in them sold from €40 up to €80. A lot of farmer custom around the ring for stronger FR calves.” Driver outlined.

Hereford and Aberdeen Angus heifers ranged from €100 to €210 - depending on quality and age. Hereford and Angus bulls clicked from €150 to €270 - depending on quality and age; continental bulls peaked at €375/head.
