‘Rearing For Rickie’ is a special fundraising project that is being organised in conjunction with Kanturk Co-operative Mart in aid of The Rickie Healy Appeal.
Rickie Healy of Crossfield, Ballyclough, Mallow suffered serious spinal injuries in a tragic swimming accident whilst on holidays with friends in July of 2017.
Currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire and starting his rehabilitation, a fundraiser is being hosted to ensure Rickie gets the best treatment available and to give him the best quality of life going forward.
In response, the main event of the 'Rearing for Rickie' fundraiser is earmarked for Friday night 23rd of March 2018 when over fifty weanlings of breeds Limousin, Aberdeen Angus and Charolais, along with a number of other once-off auction items will go under the hammer at Kanturk Mart.
100% of the proceeds raised from the ‘Rearing For Rickie’ auction including the weanlings, auction lots, and raffle will go directly to the appeal.
“The ‘Rearing For Rickie’ project has been ongoing for a number of months now and has surpassed all expectations - with the help of local & national businesses and also the farmers who have come on board.” Organiser Caroline O' Connell told That’s Farming.
Caroline explained that the idea behind the initiative was to approach a variety of businesses requesting each to sponsor the cost of purchasing a weanling. The weanling was called after the company’s name, introduced across social media and reared by a local farmer who covers the costs involved until the 23rd of March 2018.
Support from companies
“The support and goodwill have been unbelievable. The response to date has been overwhelming.” Caroline added.
A number of weanlings are also being donated by local farmers for the night or sponsored by friends & family of Rickie. The companies that have supported the project through the sponsorship of weanlings include North Cork Creameries, Herdwatch, Allenweld, Farmco Agri Trading , Fealesbridge Co-op, Rhyno Mills, Gouldings Fertilizers, Dawn Meats, Dairygold, Shamrock Farm Enterprises, Tama-Farm Grown Solutions, David J O Meara & Sons Solicitors, Joseph S Cuddigan & Co Solictors, PJ O’Driscoll & Sons, The Stand Bar Kanturk, Chasers Late Night Bar Mallow, O’ Flynn Group, Castlecor Potatoes, McDonald’s, Crowley Lanscaping, Drombrook Contracting Ltd, JMR Tiles, North Cork Business Alliance, Duhallow Hunt, Irish Rollforming Ltd, Grasstec, Cloverhill Food Ingredients, O Donovan Engineering, CID Automation, FenuHealth, Clonakilty Agricultural College.
