In the first in a mini series we talk to the next generation of farmers in Ireland first up is Meath’s Lauren Carolan a 2nd year secondary school student who loves farming and making silage.

Background in Agriculture- when did you start farming?
I started farming when I was a little girl.
How many generations is the farm within the family?
My granddad passed it on to on to my dad and I help my dad.
Tell me about your farm, system in place, day – to-day tasks?
Well I get up in the morning to check the cattle with my dad and sometimes we might have to spread out fertiliser or top a field or move cattle to a different paddock that’s in the summer and in the winter we feed them in the morning and then in the evening with silage in the slated shed.
What is your favourite thing about farming?
My Favourite bit in farming is the silage I love doing silage and when baby calves are bron too.
Have you always wanted to be a farmer?
Yes I have.
Do you want to study Agriculture in third level?
Im going into 3rd year in secondary school and hope to study it in 5th and 6th year for my leaving.
What are your Future plans in farming?
I don’t know my future plans yet but I would like to work in a vets or something like that or ag advisor.
