This week’s junior farmer is Brian Smith, a dairy farmer, who also shows cattle, from Co. Cork.

When did you start farming? I was always interested in farming since I was very young.
What sort of farming are you at? I am a dairy farmer.
How many generations are your family farming? I am a third generation dairy farmer.
Tell me about your farm/system in place/day-to-day tasks?
When I'm not in school I am up every morning milking, or feeding on our farm. We have approx 80 pedigree holstein friesian cows. In the evenings and weekends I do most of the grass management involved, including topping and spreading fertiliser. I also help with the moving of the young stock. I also prepare all our show animals for 10 approx shows we attend per year.
What is your favourite thing about farming? My favourite thing is showing dairy cows at local and national shows.
Have you always wanted to be a farmer/Do you have a future as a farmer? I have. I intend to go part time farming.
Do you want to study Agriculture in third level? Yes, I want to do a green cert as well as an electrical apprenticeship .
What are your Future plans in farming? To travel the world to shows, preparing dairy cows.
