“New breeders are welcome at all times” - Anne Mitchell

The Irish Suffolk Sheep Society was formed on February 13th, 2019; it comes on the back of a vote taken by members of the South of Ireland branch of the Suffolk Sheep Society in preparation for potential Brexit outcomes later this year.

Richard Moore from Co. Kilkenny has been appointed as Chairman.

The new society is fully registered with the Companies Registration Office; they have set up their constitution and comply with all EU directives. The Irish Suffolk Sheep Society is now a fully recognised breed society.

Dual membership for any a farmer who wants to remain with the South of Ireland Suffolk Sheep Society is accepted and will not have to choose between where they are certified.

Early Finishers

Speaking to Marcella Connolly - That’s Farming, Anne Mitchell - the newly appointed secretary - said: “We aim to promote the breed for the commercial breeder and early finishers”.

A study by Teagasc has shown that the Suffolk breed is known to have a superior growth rate and are easy fleshing fast finishers. They’re also very suitable for crossbreeding, according to Anne.

The society’s flock-book is maintained by Sheep Ireland; however, Anne explained that this is not a problem: “Anybody that is not registered with Sheep Ireland will still have their pedigrees - they will get their registration certs and they will have their certs of every sale.”

It is also guaranteed that any farmer who buys a Suffolk will have their recognised pedigree cert on the way home with their animal.

Requirements

With the society’s fast-growing numbers, Anne assures all farmers that “New breeders are welcome at all times.”

The society currently has Knockavilla and Colmcille flocks, among others on their books.

If you wish to join the society, the only requirement is that you own one Suffolk sheep; application forms are available from Anne and a small fee will apply.

The Irish Suffolk Society will officially launch their new website and Facebook page this coming weekend.

The society will be appearing at the National Sheep Championships in Kilkenny on Saturday, June 8th and they are having a premier show and sale at Roscrea Mart on Saturday, August 4th.
