Pictures & Prices: Heifers averaged €3,200 with a 60% clearance recorded, while bulls averaged €2700 with a 55% Clearance reported.

The sale topper at the Irish Angus Elite Sale - held at Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday - came in the form of Carrigroe Pearl - bred by John Appelbe - Carrigroe House, Clonakilty, Co. Cork.

The October-2017-born heifer - that hit €5,800 - was described by John as "one of the best heifers ever bred at the Carrigroe Herd."

"She brings together high indexes and show champions in her pedigree and is scanned suitable for breeding." The sale catalogue read.

The Birches Lord Heath R693 daughter is out of Carrigroe Lady Joker - the highest replacement index Angus cow in the country, according to the sales catalogue.

John received a call of €3,550 for Carrigroe New Star - a September-2016 born Rathosheen Hugo daughter and is a ful-sister of Carrigroe Kian. She sold scanned in-calf to Carrigroe New Joker and is due in early February.

Following hot Pearl's heels in the female category at €4,800 was Kerins Perkemi - a Bunlahy Kojak daughter born in September-2017 offered for sale by Bernard Kerins - Carnaree, Ballymote, Co. Sligo; she was the Reserve Junior Female Champion at Tullamore Show 2018.

Next best at €4,000 was the Reserve Female Champion - Lecarrow Polly - an April-2017-born Beryl Jamey E.T daughter; she sold with a replacement index of €96 and was bred by Patrick Murphy - Puntabeg, Charlestown, Co. Mayo

Michael & Oliver Flanagan - Moydrum, Athlone, Co. Westmeath took home €3,550 for Moydrum Primrose - a Bohey Jasper daughter born in April-2017.

"Primose is an outstanding specimen of what a true Irish Angus heifer should be and if it's stars you are after, she has an abundance." The Flanagans said.

August-2017-born Newbridge Paradise - an AllwoodPepper H246 daughter fetched €3,300 for Brendan & Edel McCawley - Cornamuckla North, Dowra, Co. Leitrim.

Hitting €3,200 for Michael Sheahan - Luddenmore, Grange, Co. Limerick was Luddenmore P302 Elba - a Portauns Volcano P643 daughter born in February-2017.

Other notable prices include:

  • Loughlynn Pretty Lady - €3150 - Patrick Regan - Ballyfarna, Claremorris, Co. Mayo;
  • Female Champion - Gallaway Princess - €3100 - Pauline McKiernan -- Augharan, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim;
  • Lecarrow Princess - €3000 - Patrick Murphy - Puntabeg, Charlestown, Co. Mayo;
  • Drumnagranshy Nicola - €2900 - John & Margaret Cyran, Drumnagranshy, Ballymote, Sligo;
  • Drumcrow Pom Pom T690 - €2800 - Frank McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh, Cavan.
  • Heifers averaged €3,200 with a 60% clearance recorded, while bulls averaged €2700 with a 55% Clearance reported.

Males

Judge Derek Lovell - Knockbrown, Bandon, Co. Cork tapped forward John & Mary Mullooly's Lavally Prince as his Champion; this March-2017-born Liss Brendan M 465 son who is a full sister was purchased by Dovea Genetics for €5,400.

€4,600 was commanded by Laheens Reputation - a January-2018-born Weeton Diamond Mine P444 son; bred by Cathal Duignan - Laheen House, Eslin Bridge, Carrick-On-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, he passed through the ring with a replacement index of €130.

Amanda Bogan - Coolarty, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford parted ways with Millbrawn Prizeman - an April-2017-born Rawburn Eventer 2nd son at €3,600.

The Reserve Male Champion - Ballydacker Norman - owned by Patrick Mulligan - Hollygrove, Ballygar, Co. Galway was knocked down at €3,500; this Mogeely Joe H979 son was born in September-2017.

Sharing the same price tag was Steil Pablo 362 - sired by The Moss Kriss L128 and offered for sale by Cathal & JJ McCormack - Steil, Tulsk, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. His dam is regarded as one of the best Angus in the Steil herd and his sister was Champion Female and sold for €5,300 in April-2017.

The pair's The Moss Kriss L128 son - Steil Phonsie 355 - sold for €3,150; he was born in September-2017 and has a replacement index of €126.

  • Greeve Pharoh - €3000 - Hugh Fox - Kye, Elphin, Co. Roscommon;
  • Bunlahy Philadelphia - €3000 - Gerard & Helen Reynolds - Bunlahy, Ballinalee, Longford;
  • Beechill Peter Pan - €3000 - Zara Dunne - The Commons, Belturbet, Co. Cavan.
