The eagerly awaited International Miss Macra festival is back, as the Bank Holiday Weekend is set to bring Macra enthusiasts together from far and wide.
All roads will once again lead to Thurles, Co. Tipperary this year, for the second time, from Friday 4th August to Sunday 6th.
Celebrating its 46th anniversary, this year Clonoulty/Rossmore Macra na Feirme club have taken organising duties into their capable hands.
Sinead Guiney, from the Avondhu region in County Cork is set to hand over her prestigious title to one of the twenty-two candidates in the running for the crown.
Judging criteria has been broken down to assess the personality, involvement in Macra, hobbies and interests, knowledge of Macra, General knowledge and Beauty and Deportment.
Judging duties will be left in the capable hands of Joan Pollard Carew from Michael’s Jewellers in Thurles Declan Ryan from Holycross (Club President) and Valerie Wheeler Spin South-West radio.
Speaking with That’s Farming, Donnacha Ryan, Festival Chairperson said:
‘The festival continues to grow and be a prominent date in the Macra Na Feirme calendar. We especially wish to thank our sponsors, Michael’s Jewellers, The Anner Hotel, FBD and Tipperary Cooperative for their continued support over the years. We hope to welcome back familiar faces and see plenty new ones over the festival weekend.’ Donnacha said.
Since the festival was founded by Paddy Heffernan, Tom Horan and Michael Slattery in 1972, several have taken on the challenge in order to be in the running for the prized-title.

Friday 4th August:
Contestants arrive and meet judges at the Anner Hotel during the day and are treated to a guided tour of the renowned Coolmore Stud. The night-time entertainment will be in a local bar, Coffey’s of Stouke in Clonoulty where we have live traditional music from local musicians with a DJ after. All proceeds from the door at this event will be given to The Helen and Sean Gleeson fund which is a local cause.
Saturday 5th August:
The live on stage interviews take place in The Dome, Thurles on the Saturday night from 8pm with Spin South West producer Nelius Stakepoole acting as MC on the night. This is followed by live music from ‘The Waxies’ and disco after.
Sunday 6th August:
Sports day, Family fun day and BBQ in Clonoulty GAA grounds @ 12pm.
Sunday evening the Gala Banquet takes place in The Anner Hotel (who are also 1st prize sponsors) from 8pm followed by announcement of 2017 winner and music from ‘Silver Dollar’ , followed by disco. ‘
