The Irish Farm Film Producers Group (IFFPG) - the national plastics recycling compliance scheme - has announced that it collected over 27,000 tonnes of farm plastics this year.
2018 has been its best year on record for collecting netting/twine - a figure that is up 92% on last year, while fertiliser/feed bags/drums collections increased by 29%.
Some 4,000 tyres (over 500,000 car tyres) were also collected; farmers disposed of their unwanted tyres at four bring centre around the country.
€700,000 was allocated in funding to support the recycling of waste tyres, which are typically used to anchor silage pits. The IFFPG outlined that farmers were charged €15/tonne for the first three tonnes of tyres and a market rate of €160/tonne applied thereafter.
