Social distancing must be practised during on-farm visits from vets and other personnel in response to the current Covid-19 outbreak.
A veterinary practice based in Worcestershire has provided an example to highlight that it is possible to adopt a practical approach to these public health requirements when carrying out a C-section.
In a post on social media, Meadows Farm Vets LTD, said: “We’re all aware of the requirement for social distancing on-farm but how can it be done in a practical situation?”
“Here’s a recent example: dairy cow requiring a Caesarean section to safely deliver a large bull calf.”
“Using a ratchet strap and discussing precautions with the farmer before starting, the vet was able to operate safely and alone.”
“The calf was removed by the farmer once the vet had attached ropes and then, purposefully stood out of the way. Once the calf was pulled clear, the vet could go back to the cow to stitch up.”
“Thanks to all who cooperated (especially the cow) and thanks to our farmers for working with us in these difficult times.” the social media post concluded.
