How many pigs have been slaughtered in 2020?

Reports from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) have shown that pig slaughter figures for 2020 remain largely unchanged from the same stage of 2019.

The total number of pigs slaughtered at DAFM export approved plants has risen by 2,643 in 2020, from 1,436,601 to 1,439,224

Throughput in week 22 of 2020:

  • Pigs – 65,773;
  • Sows – 1,609;
  • Total – 67,382.
  • Cumulative for 2020 – 1,439,224.

Throughput in week 22 of 2019:

  • Pigs – 64,464;
  • Sows – 1,616;
  • Total – 66,080;
  • Cumulative for 2019 – 1,436,601.

Prices:

Pig prices from 2 suppliers have fallen by 4c/kg in the last week, which means that all pig farmers have experienced a 32c/kg price reduction since the onset of COVID-19 in March.

On a positive note, reports suggest that markets appear to be stabilising and signs of improvement are beginning to emerge.

Top prices on a flat rate basis at Rosderra and Kepak were €1.62-€1.66/kg, while Staunton’s and Dawn were paying €1.64-€1.66/kg.

Meanwhile, sows earned €0.75-€1.00/kg deadweight.
