Heineken Ireland has found a solution to the large amounts of beer products sitting in shuttered bars, hotels and restaurants around the country.
On May 19th, Heineken Ireland issued a statement to publicans, hotel and restaurant owners that they would commence the collection of broached and full kegs that are passed or will soon be passed their sell-by date.
Company Trade Commercial Director, Sharon Walsh, said: “All of the product will be sustainably disposed of by HEINEKEN Ireland and our partners through a combination of measures across agriculture (e.g. animal feed) and green energy production.”
Agricultural commodities
It is reported that over 100,000 kegs were left idle in these establishments as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, and it now appears that the brewer may recycle it as an agricultural commodity, such as in the form of fertiliser.
The move comes as part of an “unprecedented quality and cleaning operation” undertaken by Heineken Ireland.
“This would promote optimum soil mineral balance in order to optimise crop production efficiency in terms of yield and output,” they said.
