Hedgecutting deadline looms

Time to put the saws down.

Hedgecutting and gorse burning will be prohibited from March 1st of this week.

There have been talks over proposed changes to allow for more hedgecutting and burning though those changes are still not enacted.

Farmers may not cut our burn until August 31st. This is to allow wildlife time to breed and habitat.

Poll

We asked readers recently what their thoughts on proposed changes to the current legislation were. Should the bill be passed? Nearly 200 of you took our poll, and the results are as follows.

87% of farmers surveyed said they want the bill to extend the hedge-cutting and burning season to be approved. 74% of you said that you’re not concerned about the threat this would pose to wildlife numbers.

Opinion has been mixed on the proposed legislation; Oonagh Duggan acting head of policy with Birdwatch Ireland has called for no changes to the existing laws:

“The position that Birdwatch Ireland has is that there should be no changes to the dates on upland burning and hedge-cutting, the dates are set to protect our birds so they can live a full life cycle; each bird in the uplands and hedgerows have different start times.”
