Protecting your crops from both birds and wild animals can prove a troublesome task, with some farmers using bangers and others preferring other more conventional methods such as scarecrows. But is there any more cost-effective and better way of keeping them away? Yes, there is such as the design (Courtesy of Mayur Patel) below!
As you can see from the video this is a simple yet effective design. All that is needed is a stick, an aluminium can, string, washers, a shiny strip of flexible and light metal, a small metal bar or instrument (to push through the stick), screws and a drill. From watching the above video, you can easily see how this design, which was originally to deter wild boar, was put into place.
Firstly, you must drill a hole near the top of the stick in the very centre. Next, the can should be fitted to the Stick. This can be done by simply drilling a hole in the can and screwing it to the stick, a small bit below where the first hole was drilled.
Then, you need to place the stick in the field where you want it used. The small metal bar/instrument should then be slotted through the top bored hole in the stick, with the shiny metal strip slotted onto the front of it and fitted into place with a washer (like a fan). The ‘fan’ should be capable of moving in the wind and many different variations will work. On the back of the metal stick, where it is coming out the other side, You should design something that will attach to the instrument and strike the can below.
The combination of both moving objects (the fan like strip), shiny materials and the noise from the can should help keep the unwanted pests away and in turn, protect your crops.
It works, is easy to make, very cost effective and is also eco-friendly. What more could you want? There are also other designs circulating on the net, such as the one previously published by us on another installment of Farm hacks. You can watch and read about that design here.
