The burials of Declan Davitt and Martin Needham were held today, following their tragic road accident on Christmas morning. The pair died after they jeep they were traveling in, went off the road and into a river. The jeep was then swept away by the current, as it became submerged in water.
The pair was named as local farmers Declan Davitt and Martin Needham, who also were members of their local Louisburgh Macra na Feirme Club. They were described as valued members of the club, since its re-establishment and were known to be two absolute gentlemen.
Their removal was held yesterday and the pair received a send-off they would be proud of, having immersed themselves in agricultural life. Declan and Martin received a guard of honour, with tractors lighting up the night sky and path to the church. In a touching tribute, a large number of tractors can be seen lining either side of the road..
Declan's funeral was also live-streamed from Kileen church, by Dowd Media, which you can watch here. Declan had lived in New Zealand for three years and also had friends in the US, so Declan’s family asked for it to be streamed for them to watch. A touching tribute, on a tough day for Mayo, our thoughts and sympathies go to the Davitt and Needham families.
