Food giant and Irish based company Greencore have called for a voluntary recall of egg salad sandwiches, ham salad sandwiches and seafood stuffing in the USA.
The foods are being recalled after listeria monocytogenes were found in environmental sampling carried out by the FDA. Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogenic bacteria that causes listeriosis which may lead to infections of the central nervous system.
Shares fell in the company by 7.2% yesterday after the recall was announced.
It’s been reported that about 100 items were affected and the issue related to ingredients supplied to Greencore by an external supplier.
“No finished products have been found to have listeria present and no confirmed illnesses have been reported,” the FDA said in a statement.
The company themselves said: “This is a purely precautionary measure, as no finished products have been found to have listeria present and no confirmed illnesses have been reported. The site in question remains fully operational, with the impacted area having received a deep clean.’’
