‘No decision on next week’s sale is being taken at present’ – Brosnan

Gortatlea Mart will hold its weekly calf sale tomorrow (Thursday, March 19th), despite yesterday’s announcement.

Maurice Brosnan issued a statement yesterday (Tuesday, March 17th) outlining that a decision had been taken to cancel all scheduled sales for the next two weeks in response to the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a statement this morning (Wednesday, March 18th), the mart manager said: “Due to unprecedented demand and to help reduce stress and pressure on dairy farms and with animal welfare in mind, Gortalea Mart has decided to hold their weekly calf sale tomorrow, March 19th. No decision on next week’s sale is being taken at present.”
Guidelines

He highlighted that new additional protocols are in place as per HSE and government guidelines.”These guidelines will be enforced and we request that patrons would adhere to them and cooperate fully with mart staff.”

  • Limited access will only be allowed in the sales rings to people who have business to conduct there, and at all times will be restricted to less than 100 people;
  • Gortatlea Mart would ask only people with business at the mart to attend (buyers, sellers and hauliers) during this crisis;
  • Parents are requested to keep children away from the mart at this time due to the current situation.

“Your co-operation with the protocol would be appreciated. For queries, please contact the mart office.” Brosnan concluded.
