Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Business and Innovation, Frances Fitzgerald has resigned from her position.
"I believe it is necessary to take this decision to avoid an unwelcome and potentially destabilising general election at this historically critical time.” Fitzgerald said in a statement.
The news comes this afternoon after the Taoiseach informed Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin in writing, that he had accepted Fitzgerald’s resignation.
The Taoiseach has paid tribute to Frances Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald posted on her Twitter page to say that she will be attending the Dublin Mid-West Fine Gael Selection Convention this evening and she will be putting her name forward for selection.
