About 20% of food produced is being wasted due to over eating and food waste a report has found.

The BBC have reported on a new study from Scotland which says almost 20% of food made availbale to consumers is being lost through over eating and waste.
Certain parts of the world consumes 10% more food than it needs while almost 9% is thrown away or left to spoil.

The study used data from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Almost half of harvested crops – or 2.1 billion tonnes was lost through over consumption, user waste and inefficiencies in the production process.
The study found that livestock production was the least efficient with losses of 78% or 840 million tonnes.

Dr Peter Alexander, of Edinburgh University's school of geosciences and Scotland's rural college told the BBC: "Reducing losses from the global food system would improve food security and help prevent environmental harm.

"Until now, it was not known how over-eating impacts on the system. Not only is it harmful to health, we found that over-eating is bad for the environment and impairs food security."
