Here at That’s Farming, we are delighted to bring you a new series, which will focus on showcasing small food producers making a big difference. First up is Herterich Artisan Butchery,.

Ballymahon Co. Longford-based Louis Herterich of Herterich Artisan Butchery LTD is a butcher with a difference.

Originally from Braviera, South- Germany which brought about unique butchering skills, sausages, black and white puddings, spiced beef, lamb and cooked meats are among some of the products that have put the family-run business on the map nationwide.

The family can now boast about bringing100 years of experience to the table, steeped in three generations.

Establishing base

In 1906, Louis’ grandfather came to the Irish island and opened the first pork butcher shop in Naas, County Kildare six years later.

Fifty years following this, Louis’ father came to Longford and established the county’s first pork butcher shop.

‘He used to get up on his bicycle on a Sunday cycling around the roads of Longford looking for pigs ready for trade. He cycled two or three miles, some days even twenty-five miles and he still mightn’t find a pig that was ready’. Louis told That’s Farming.

‘He had a great reputation. He was a fantastic judge of a pig, could tell the carcass weights and live on-hoof and paid very fair prices for the pig. ’ Louis added.

Little did they know that this region would become the future and current home of the Herterich family.

Expansion

Due to increasingly popularity, the premises underwent a major development in 1982. The first floor former living area was transformed into offices, stores and a test kitchen, in order to make way for large-scale production. Herterichs soon became the favourite of many shops, hotels and restaurants in the Midlands. In 1999, fours following the death of Louis’ father, the entire premises was renovated, with the cut-stone, being the only remaining component.

‘The business has developed and built down through the years. It has been a slow and long development.’ Louis commented.

Today

An admirable sixty one years later this November, Herterich has become a household name, generating interest outside of the Longford border.

Today, the building is large-scale, with a butchery-counter delicatessen, selling bakery products, a café, manufacturing units, catering kitchens and offices.

Made to order!

It’s safe to say that the Herterichs aren’t quite your average butchers.

‘You Design We Make’ has become one of the enterprise’s biggest hits, allowing customers to place their order, a secret recipe, with the Herterichs manufacturing a batch of 5kg minimum.

Online Shop

The business has an online shop so you can get their prize-winning products straight to your door, 24 hours from the time you purchase.

‘We decided to put it all into a commercial website. It’s a way of having a shop front on every road in Ireland’ Louis said.

Orders below €75 are subject to a flat rate of €10 delivery charge. All orders of €75 or more is free of charge.

Nationwide

Focusing on Roscommon, Mayo, Galway, Cavan and Leitrim, launching into fifty Supervalu stores throughout Ireland is the most recent ongoing venture for the Herterichs.
