David Clarke Livestock — which is based in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath — travelled to Austria earlier this week to select in-calve Fleckvieh heifers from indoor robotic herds for a dairy farm in Scotland.
“The herds we visited were producing between 650kgs and 750kgs of milk solids, on average, and were mainly milked and fed by robots.” the company explained on social media.
“The average herd size we visited was about 70 cows. The average dairy herd size for Austria is 25 cows.”
“Beef was also produced from the male calves – All males went for meat at 16 months.”
“Their average carcass weight was 400 kgs and 80% were U grade or higher.” David Clarke Livestock concluded.
