We are running low on silage so we are letting as many animals as possible out to grass, writes Michael Danagher. Other jobs this week include tagging calves, collecting hay and dairy calves.

Name: Michael Danagher

Location: Errill, Co. Laois

Enterprise: Pedigree Charolais herd with a number of commercial breeding females with 60% Shorthorn blood and some Charolais and Belgian-Blue influence. 60% of progeny finished on-farm.

We agitated a number of slurry tanks this week, with a view to spreading this at the weekend, if weather and ground conditions allow.

We moved young bullocks – approximately 350-370kgs - out to grass and have introduced a strip grazing system; they will be sold at the mart in August.

We are collecting hay that we purchased two weeks ago; we can transport two bales using our own trailer.

Rearing calves

The milk replacer that I won as part of Wicklow Calf Company’s competition was delivered on Monday. I'm delighted producer as there seems to be a lot more powder in the bags than the other brands we used previously and it appears to be of better quality.

We bought 20 Hereford bull calves – aged between 14-20-days-old - direct from a dairy farm; we collected them yesterday (Thursday).

Grazing

Three calves were born on the farm this week – a Charolais heifer, a Charolais bull and a Hereford bull.

Tagging our newborn calves is on the cards today (Friday); we will then bring the suckler pairings to the outfarm.

We are running low on silage so we are letting as many animals as possible out to grass; we have lots of grass so are lucky to be able to offload stock early.
