Farmers urged to roll silage ground

The Farm Contractors of Ireland (FCI) is calling on its members to urge farmers to roll all silage ground now, as ground conditions are favourable.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for the association outlined that this action will ensure less mower, baler and harvester breakages due to stone damage during silage harvest. “This simple rolling land procedure will prevent costly delays and critical downtime, which ends up costing farmers more.”

Machinery parts availability

“Rolling silage fields is more critical this year than any other year; this is because at FCI, we are being made aware that machinery parts availability may be an issue in the coming weeks due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions across Europe.”

Parts shortages are being predicted by FCI colleague members within CEETTAR, the European organisation of agricultural, rural and forestry contractors, following a recent update survey, initiated by FCI, in the past week, among farm and forestry contractor associations across Europe.

“Get your silage customers to roll fields closed for grass silage NOW.” the statement concluded.
