The 71-year old man, Patrick Meehan, was badly injured when the car driven by his wife crashed directly into the back of a bin lorry. The incident occurre3d approximately five years ago, and the court heard from Mr Meehan’s counsel, Frank Callinan, that Mr. Meehan is still in need of a crutch to walk and needs constant 24-hour care.
He accepted the offer from his wife during the week and is now in line to receive a €1million damages fee.
Mr. Meehan is himself a retired truck driver, and now a farmer, hails from Mountcharles in Co. Donegal. he won the case as the court heard details of how his wife came about to crash.
It was claimed that the car she was driving, containing Mr. Meehan, suddenly without warning veered out of control and into the back of a truck parked in the hard shoulder. The accident occurred in 2010 near Grange, Co. Sligo.
Mr. Meehan suffered numerous injuries at the time, which include several bone fractures, and suffered cognitive impairment also as a result.
The Judge ruled in his favour and found that Mr. Meehan’s quality and standard of life had been affected by the accident, and ruled for him to receive €1million in compensation.
