Relatives of 140 bereaved families and key figures from the agricultural community attended the event to remember those who lost their lives or suffered injury on Irish farms.

Embrace FARM hosted its annual ecumenical remembrance service last Sunday, June 24th, in the Church of the Most Holy Rosary in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.

Relatives of 140 bereaved families gathered from all over the country to commemorate all those who lost their lives or suffered injury on Irish farms.

This marks the fifth year of the remembrance ceremony organised by Embrace FARM.

According to the Teagasc National Farm Survey, the number of farm accidents has jumped by 31% in the last 10 years, and tragically, 1% of such accidents reported resulted in a fatality.

Farm accidents cause tragedy, pain and suffering. Embrace FARM provides a support network for farming families who have lost a loved one or suffered serious injury in a farming accident.

The meaningful ceremony was led by Bishop Denis Nulty and Canon Patrick Harvey, along with other clergies. Key leaders and well-known figures from the agri-sector were also in attendance, showing solidarity and support to those affected, while also highlighting the awareness of farm safety across rural Ireland.

Those in attendance included:

  • Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed TD;
  • Mairead McGuinness MEP;
  • An Taoiseach’s Aide-De-Camp Captain Larry Scallon;
  • Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) president Pat McCormack;
  • Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) president Patrick Kent;
  • Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) president Ivor Ferguson;
  • Ulster Young Farmers’ Clubs (UYFC) president James Speers;
  • Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) director general Damian McDonald;
  • Former Irish Rugby international John Hayes;
  • Larry Goodman, ABP Food Group owner;
  • Representatives from the Department of Agriculture and Teagasc.

Embrace FARM was represented by co-founders Brian and Norma Rohan, along with the voluntary board of directors who give their time for the development of the organisation.

Embrace FARM was founded by Brian and Norma Rohan from Shanahoe, Co. Laois in 2014, following the loss of Brian’s father, Liam Rohan, to a sudden farm accident in 2013.
