We spoke to farm accident survivor Peter Gohery about the upcoming conference.

Embrace FARM are set to host a Farm Accident Survivors Conference, what is believed to be the first event of its kind for the Agricultural community.

The conference is calendared to occur on Saturday 25th November in the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise, from 12-3.30pm.

Registration for the conference will commence at 11.30am.

Topics of discussion

The session will provide information on social welfare, financial, legal and making adaptions to farm machinery.

A number of guest speakers are lined-up for the conference, including survivors telling their story, their families speaking about the impact and Rehabilitation, Occupational and Mental Health.

Peter Gohery, one of the Directors of Embrace FARM says that the conference is tailored towards people who have suffered from a work-place farm accident, which ranges from but is not limited to a fall off a ladder to an attack by a bull and the loss of a limb.

Creating links

Speaking with That’s Farming, Peter Gohery said:

“We want to link them up with other people that are there to allow them to talk about what they have gone through emotionally, financially and mentally.” Peter told Catherina of That’s Farming.

“The way I see it is that as farmers we are told to get out there and get on with it. In the future, we will be looking for the Minister to implement some support, possibly adaptions grant-aided to machinery, to make life easier for a person with a disability after an accident.” Peter added.

Farm Accident

As a farm accident survivor, Peter, a great support of farm safety initiatives has faced a number of challenges and because he is a farmer being self-employed, he is not entitled to an invalidity or disability pension.

“The big problem that I see there is that if you try to look for a job and you have a disability, they really don’t want you. They will use every excuse in the book and move on.” Peter said.

“I see there for myself unless you get into a crowd that see you for the potential that you have, there are a lot of them that do not want you.” Peter said.
