Eid al-Adha driving prices

Factories are paying up to €5.85/kg (including bonuses) for lambs this week, with most quoting in the region of €5.50-€5.75/kg (including bonuses).

Ewes are hovering around the €2.50-€2.60/kg mark.

Demand remains strong as factories attempt to secure supplies for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha with 1,590,592 head slaughtered so far this year (excludes this week’s throughput).

Last week’s national sheep kill stood at 67,563 head, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine’s database.

Summary

  • Spring lambs: 58,474;
  • Ewes and rams: 8,577;
  • Light lambs: 1.

The kill for the corresponding period last year was 60,260 head, just over 7,000 head behind this week’s throughput.
