Carol Nolan - TD for Offaly/ North Tipperary - believes that those who engage in illegal dumping along roadsides and on farms and bogland should be punished with "much heftier fines".
Acknowledging that illegal dumping in many rural areas of Co. Offaly has been an "ongoing issue for some time", the TD shed light on the activity, following an incident that occurred in the Kilcormac area in recent days.
Releasing a statement, the TD said: "I feel that things are getting worse; there is no excuse for this disgusting behaviour! The response to these offences - which are becoming all too common - is not tough enough."
She is of the opinion that fines should be at least trebled along with compelling the perpetrators involved to do "a long stint" of community service in order to appreciate the efforts of many volunteer groups such as Tidy Towns committees.
Concluding the statement, the TD said she has followed up with Offaly County Council on behalf of the residents impacted by this particular incident, saying, "enough is enough."
