Dozens of straw bales have been intentionally set alight yesterday in a reported arson incident.
An investigation is currently underway after over a dozen straw bales were set alight at a farm in Ferryhill. The incident is being put down to suspected arson, as reported by the northern echo.
Firefighters were called to the area at approximately 1 pm yesterday after calls came in about a fire at a local farm. Upon arrival it was clear that someone had set a group of straw bales on fire.
The firefighters from Newton Aycliffe battled the blaze at the farm at Gypsy Lane near Ferryhill and eventually got the blaze under control after three long hours. They were helped at the scene by a farmer, who used a mechanical digger to aid in the extinguishing.
It was reported that approximately 18 bales had being set on fire in the farmer's field, and it is believed they were set alight by a group of children.
The incident is currently under investigation by local Durham Police who are appealing for anyone with any information on the incident to come forward.
