Danny Healy Rae, Independent TD, discussed the Dáil’s policy on climate change and asked the government why they are imposing targets that Impact rural Ireland, specifically working families and farmers.
“It seems that there is a race now between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to see who will be greener than the Greens,” he said.
Referring to media headlines that stated that Ireland wants to force private motorists out of their cars, the TD addressed the Taoiseach arguing that “people in rural Ireland can’t manage without a car and a lot of your ideas are ridiculous and your targets are ridiculous”.
He followed this statement with some statistics “There are 4.8 million [people] in Ireland which equates to .06 of the world’s population."
"India and China equate to 40% of the world’s population and if we were totally emissions free, it’s equal to .13 of 1% in the worldwide context”."
He continued to ask why they are imposing these targets in rural Ireland, especially for working families and farmers.
He wrapped up his dialogue by asking, “Do ye know that ye are frightening the daylights out of the people?”
