Calving is winding down here with only six cows remaining in the bovine maternity unit; calving will get underway during the first week of July, but we hope to scan our cows in a month; this will allow us to review their due dates.
Five cows calved this week – 4 beef-sired calves and one Holstein bull; all are healthy which is the main thing. The cows have not been out this week; it will be another number of days before they are turned out due to poor ground conditions and Tuesday’s rain.
The breeding season is going well, with a number of heifers set to be AI’d to KYA – an Aberdeen-Angus sire – in the coming days. We have used this bull since we began dairying and hope to utilise him for many years to come, due to satisfactory results.
We retained one suckler cow – a Shorthorn-cross-Holstein-Friesian – after dispersing our suckler herd in 2015; she is in-calf a Belgian Blue sire and will rear the calf before we selling him/her as a weanling next autumn.
Heifers are now being fed silage bales, as opposed to pit silage to save supplies as a long spring could be in store – who knows?
