A deluge of rain, re-housing cows, spreading fertiliser, detecting heat, milk prices and more!

Name: Aran Connell

Location: Mizen Head, West Cork.

Enterprise: Dairy farm - milking 140 Holstein Friesians in partnership with his father.

Cow performance: 34-litres at 3.80% Butterfat and 3.46% Protein – SCC: 104

We had a deluge of rain last weekend and although I didn't measure it, there was definitely more than 29.1mm of rain reported at Cork Airport.

As a result, cows were housed for two nights and one day and there have been grazing full-time since Monday evening.

We have about seven days of first-round grass left to graze and we’re into our second rotation then.

While grass is growing, it is nothing substantial; cows will continue to receive a buffer feed until growth improves as covers on the second-round are quite low.

We are spreading a bag-and-a-half of 18.6.12 on paddocks. We pre-mowed the majority of the first-round grass; the silage ground is pushing on.

Breeding got underway fourteen days ago and sixty cows have been served to date. They all showed strong heats and we AI’d them ourselves.

Heifers will be AI’d from Monday onwards; we aim to synch these in order to have them all served within a three-week period.

We will be using tail paint and scratch cards for heat detection purposes.

The beet stubble was ploughed before the rain and we were going to push to sow it but we're glad we didn't because of the adverse weather conditions.

Next Week

We plan to undertake this task next week. We didn't manage to cut any of the silage either and after the rain, it is not lodged so must try to cut some of that.
