Dairy sector emissions drop by 3%

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published details of Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 for companies in the EU emissions trading system.

Most notably, the data showed that greenhouse gas emissions from Irish power generation and industrial companies fell by 8.7 per cent in 2019.

The EPA stated that the fall in emissions is due to a significant drop in power generation emissions, at approximately 12.3%, resulting from the strong presence of renewable energy, such as wind energy, and a lower reliance on fossil fuels.

Their data showed a decrease of 65% from the ESB coal-fired plant at Moneypoint, which was mainly due to the availability of renewables. In 2019, the dairy industry experienced a decrease of 3%.

Emissions from flights within the European Economic Area experienced an increase of 2.8% from 2018’s data to 12.77 million tonnes.

Dr Maria Martin, EPA Senior Manager, said: “This is the third year in a row that we have seen a fall in greenhouse gas emissions from participants in the EU Emissions Trading System, mainly power generation and industry.”

Although this news has been welcomed by the EPA, Martin gave a reminder that there is still work to do to meet our climate goals and create a low-carbon economy.
