Dairy calf numbers rise by over 45,000 in 2020

According to statistics from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), the number of calves registered in 2020 has seen an increase of 50,906 from the same stage last year.

However, the number of registrations last week in comparison to the same stage of 2019 has fallen by 8,166, from 39,998 to 31,832.

The most dramatic fall has been in the number of beef calves born last week. The numbers have fallen by 6,769, from 26,461 to 19,692. However, the same cannot be said for the total number of beef births in 2020, which has increased by 5,150 to 588,633.

Similarly, the number of dairy calves born has seen a dramatic increase in 2020, rising by 45,756 to 1.351,310.

Pedigree registrations:

  • Week ending June 12th of 2020 – 951;
  • Week ending June 12th of 2019 – 1,093;
  • Total registered in 2020 – 76,365;
  • Total registered at same stage in 2019 – 78,242.

Registrations using animal events (AE) book:

  • Week ending June 12th of 2020 – 16,470;
  • Week ending June 12th of 2019 – 21,751;
  • Total registered in 2020 – 1,287,043;
  • Total registered at same stage in 2019 – 1,273,500.

Total beef births:

  • Week ending June 12th of 2020 – 19,692;
  • Week ending June 12th of 2019 – 26,461;
  • Total registered in 2020 – 588,633;
  • Total registered at same stage in 2019 – 583,483.

Total dairy births:

  • Week ending June 12th of 2020 – 12,140;
  • Week ending June 12th of 2019 – 13,537;
  • Total registered in 2020 – 1,351,310;
  • Total registered at same stage in 2019 – 1,305,554.

Total calf births registered:

  • Week ending June 12th of 2020 – 31,832;
  • Week ending June 12th of 2019 – 39,998;
  • Total registered in 2020 – 1,939,934;
  • Total registered at same stage in 2019 – 1,889,037.
