Behold the Polaris Sportsman 570, a marauding 44 horsepower quad that is the most popular ATV in the world. Equipped with a Prostar engine, this was my first time onboard a Polaris and after hearing a lot of positive news about these machines, I was itching to get out and kick some dirt with it. We purchased our first farm quad 13 years ago in the shape of a Honda Fourtrak and we are currently on our fourth quad. Couple that with my Yamaha GYTR 700 Raptor sitting in my garage and I felt I was more than qualified to take on the Polaris. And for all my experience, it didn't exactly stand to me.
And the reason ? It was so easy to drive. Even though there is a ground clearance of 11 inches, this is one perfectly balanced machine. Sure you can get yourself into a situation where you are suddenly perched on 3 wheels but for day to day chores, this is a total workhorse. With 44 horsepower and a rated towing capacity of 680 kgs and an ability to carry 120 kilos on its front and rear frames, its a total all rounder and rival manufacturers figures for their relative machines pale in comparison
#. And its not just on the stats that the Sportsman defeats its rivals, it has "High Performance On Demand All Wheel Drive" which is a pretty nifty system. In simple English, the Quad is constant rear wheel drive but at the flick of a switch, it can become permanently 4 wheel drive or on demand all wheel drive. If the rear wheels lose grip, 4 wheel drive is instantly engaged until your ride becomes stable again. Coming down a steep descent activates an engine braking system which stops gravity taking hold of you and sending you to your local A&E.#
And you wont tire too easily driving this machine, it has a power assisted steering system and a suspension system that is unbelievably smooth. I aimed this at some pretty rough ground and rocks and it glided over them as if it was day old tarmac. The instrumentation on the bike is all digitally relayed, and you will get quiet the shock if you glance down at the speedo at full whack, believe me when I say this thing shifts. Now its not a race quad despite its "Sportsman" name.If you're a novice to the four wheeler world, the Polaris is the most learner friendly "Big Bike" you can get. It wont stop you crashing and turning it over when you decide to leave your brain behind you but if you are in the market for a work horse and a simple drive, this is the ATV to get. And then you have a choice of colours and a host of optional extras.
From toolboxes, extra lights and winches, these can be seriously kitted out. The long and short of it, its the most popular brand of quad in the world. Now everyone cant be wrong, can they ?
